What is PDF flattening?

PDF flattening converts separate interactive objects into fixed page content. Form flattening writes each field’s current appearance into the page. Annotation flattening fixes the visible appearance of highlights, stamps and drawing marks, then removes the interactive objects. Complete flattening instead turns every page into image-based content.

Standard vs complete flattening

PDF flattening is not one universal operation. The right method depends on whether you need preserved document structure or the most fixed page appearance.

Flatten PDF, Protect PDF and image PDFs

Flattening changes document objects; protection encrypts a PDF and requires a password to open it. Flattening is not encryption and does not prevent screenshots, OCR, copying from standard-mode text, or later re-editing.

Standard flattening retains ordinary PDF text and structure where possible. Complete flattening is the image-based option: it fixes appearance more strongly but usually removes text search, copy, links and bookmarks.

File handling and privacy

This tool uploads the PDF to Setpdf’s processing worker. Random temporary names are used, document content and original filenames are not logged, and input, output and temporary files are deleted after success, failure or timeout. File size, page count, rendering resolution, processing time and memory are limited for safe operation.

Output compatibility

Automated tests verify that output files reopen successfully in two independent PDF parsers. Reader-specific compatibility is not claimed until that reader has been tested directly.

Frequently asked questions

Does flattening make a PDF non-editable?

It removes the targeted interactive objects, but it does not guarantee that the PDF can never be edited again. Other software can still alter page content.

Will filled form values remain visible?

Yes. Standard mode writes the fields’ current visible appearances into the page before removing the interactive fields. Complete mode captures the whole visible page.

Can I still search and copy text?

Standard mode aims to preserve ordinary searchable text. Complete mode rebuilds pages as images, so text is normally no longer searchable or copyable without OCR.

Are annotations, highlights and stamps preserved?

Their visible appearances are retained when the PDF supplies a usable appearance, and the corresponding annotation objects are removed.

Does flattening preserve digital signatures?

No guarantee is possible. Rewriting a signed PDF normally changes signed bytes and invalidates signature verification, even if the visible signature remains.

Is flattening the same as password protection?

No. Flattening changes interactive content; Protect PDF encrypts access. Flattening does not stop screenshots, OCR or determined re-editing.
