A PDF can store document-level attachments through an EmbeddedFiles name tree.
A file attachment annotation can associate an embedded file with a position on a specific page.

What is a PDF attachment?
A PDF attachment is a separate file stored inside the PDF container. It may be a Word document, spreadsheet, XML data, ZIP archive, image, text file or another PDF. Adding it does not convert its contents into visible PDF pages.
Document attachments and page annotations
Document-level attachments are listed in the PDF EmbeddedFiles name tree and belong to the document as a whole. File attachment annotations point to a file from a particular page position. Setpdf detects, labels and manages both sources separately.
Why PDFs contain other files
Invoices may carry source XML, reports may include spreadsheets, portfolios may include supporting documents, and legal or administrative PDFs may bundle evidence. The reader decides how visibly these files are presented.
Security and capability boundaries
An attachment can contain any file type and may be unsafe. Scan downloaded files with trusted security software before opening them. Setpdf does not execute, render, preview or unpack attachments.
Names, descriptions and MIME labels can be missing or inaccurate.
Ordinary links, images and fonts are not reported as attachments.
Writing attachment changes normally invalidates existing digital signatures.
How management works
Upload a PDF to scan its actual attachment structures. Download original attachment bytes, queue name or description changes, add files, mark files for deletion, then generate a rewritten PDF. Setpdf reopens the result to verify its attachment list.
Reader visibility
Dedicated desktop PDF readers commonly expose an attachments panel, while some browser and operating-system viewers may not show embedded files prominently. A file can therefore contain attachments even when the current reader does not display them.
File handling and privacy
The PDF and any files you add are uploaded to Setpdf’s processing worker. Random temporary names are used. File contents, original filenames, descriptions and passwords are not logged. Input, output, attachment and temporary files are deleted after success, failure or timeout. Size, count, page, processing-time and memory limits are enforced.
PDF attachment questions
Can a PDF contain Word, Excel, ZIP or XML files?
Yes. PDF embedded files can contain arbitrary byte data. The attachment type is not converted into page content.
Are PDF attachments the same as hyperlinks?
No. A hyperlink points to a location or resource; an attachment stores a separate file inside the PDF.
Does Setpdf support page attachment annotations?
Yes. It detects file attachment annotations, reports their page source, extracts them, and can update or remove them.
Will pages or bookmarks change?
The tool preserves page content, order, size, bookmarks and ordinary metadata while rewriting attachment structures. Any PDF rewrite can invalidate a digital signature.
Are extracted attachments safe to open?
Not necessarily. Attachments can contain any file type. Setpdf does not execute them or certify them as safe; scan them with trusted security software.
Why can’t my PDF reader see an attachment?
Reader interfaces differ. Some readers have a dedicated attachment panel, while others hide or do not clearly expose embedded files.
Can I process a password-protected PDF?
Yes, only when you provide the valid opening password. Setpdf does not bypass encryption.
