What Repair PDF can recover
Cross-reference and trailer problems
Setpdf can reconstruct recoverable object locations and trailer information when the original lookup structure is damaged.
Malformed PDF structure
The worker opens tolerant input, preserves readable pages and objects, and writes a normalized PDF structure.
EOF and reader compatibility
A complete rewrite creates a valid end-of-file section and can make recoverable PDFs readable by tools that rejected the source.
What it cannot repair
• Severely truncated or incomplete downloads with essential data missing
• Pages, images, fonts or objects that are no longer present in the file
• Content that was overwritten or deleted before upload
• Password-protected PDFs without the correct password
• Every form of PDF corruption or application-specific damage
Common causes of PDF damage
• Interrupted downloads, transfers or cloud synchronization
• Incomplete exports from office or document software
• Incorrect byte-range or incremental update data
• Storage corruption or unsafe file editing
• Non-standard PDF producers and malformed object references
How the repair works
Setpdf analyzes the document structure, rewrites the readable parts, and checks that the resulting file opens normally.
Repair does not recreate lost data
Structural recovery can reconnect readable objects, but it cannot invent pages, images, fonts or text whose bytes are missing. Always compare the result with a trusted source copy.
Upload and automatic deletion
The PDF is uploaded over HTTPS to a private random temporary directory. Processing is limited to 50 MB, 2000 pages and 60 seconds. Input, output and temporary files are deleted after the response, including worker errors and timeouts.

Repair PDF questions
Can Setpdf repair every damaged PDF?
No. Setpdf can recover many structural errors, but it cannot restore bytes or objects that are missing, overwritten or encrypted without a password.
What does rebuilding the cross-reference table do?
The cross-reference data tells readers where PDF objects are stored. When it is damaged, Setpdf can scan readable objects and write new lookup information.
Will repair change the appearance of my pages?
Setpdf does not intentionally edit page content. It rewrites the PDF container, but damaged or missing source objects can still affect appearance and must be checked.
Can Repair PDF open a password-protected file?
No. Setpdf returns an encrypted-file status and does not attempt to bypass the password. Use Unlock PDF only when you know the correct password.
Why does a normal PDF say no repair was needed?
That status means Setpdf did not emit recovery warnings. Setpdf still creates a rewritten copy, but it does not claim that a defect was found.
Does Setpdf keep the uploaded or repaired PDF?
No. Random temporary files exist only during processing and are removed after the response, including failure, timeout and worker-crash paths.
